Digital Garden

What is a digital garden?

A digital garden is a method for organizing and sharing knowledge, thoughts, and ideas in a flexible and interconnected way. The notes don’t have to be polished or finished; they can be shared as incomplete ideas that will develop over time and ideally create new connections, which may eventually lead to the development of a blog post or similar content to share fresh insights.

I have decided to publish my digital garden, which I already maintain for myself locally in Obsidian, on my personal website, as one or the other note might be exciting for you and initiate new thoughts and ideas.

How did I build my digital garden?

I use the software Obsidian to create, edit, and organize my notes, and it’s convenient because I can do this on both my smartphone and laptop. The app automatically adds important information like creation dates, editing dates, and footnotes, which makes it user-friendly. I wanted the process of creating and maintaining notes to be straightforward, without any technical challenges, so I would actually use it.

My Obsidian Vault syncs automatically with GitHub whenever I make changes. Each day, the latest version of my GitHub project is automatically fetched from my personal website and shown in this digital garden, so I don’t have to manually deploy my local changes.

Ideas (to implement)

  • add backlink logic to other notes
  • support for nested categories/folders
  • add handmade scribbles to notes
  • add “random note” feature for sidebar navigation
  • dynamic open graph images for notes and topics
